Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? We’re here to help
What if I'm a complete newbie when it comes to gold prospecting?
No problem at all. The GPAA is dedicated to providing education and resources that will introduce you to the world of gold prospecting. The mining guide included with your membership is full of information on how to find gold. The pan and free gold bag will be your jumping off point to learn panning techniques at home prior to accessing a gold claim. You will also learn from seasoned prospectors through the GPAA Online Community & local GPAA Chapters, as well as a wealth of knowledge provided to you in Gold Prospectors Magazine. You're in good hands as a member of the Gold Prospectors Association of America.
How can you guarantee I will find gold?
While your success in the field is solely dependent on how you apply what you learn and how hard you work, we can guarantee you'll find gold because for a limited time we are including it free with your membership. You'll still need to work for it since the gold will be mixed with dirt and iron sand, but there is gold in your free paydirt bag and it will help you perfect your panning skills. This paydirt bag is valued at $50.
How much does GPAA Membership cost?
Membership in the GPAA is $199 which includes 12 months of GPAA benefits from the time you sign up. Your membership will automatically renew at $120 per year until you cancel it. If you cancel during a 12 month term, you will continue to enjoy GPAA benefits until that term is up.
Do I need your membership to prospect for gold?
You do not need a GPAA Membership to prospect for gold, but here are a few reasons why you should have a GPAA Membership.
1. A lot of public land has been claimed up, meaning individuals or corporations hold the mineral rights to any precious metals on that land. If you are prospecting on someone elses claim, you are considered to be claim jumping. If you take any minerals off of someone elses claim, you are considered to be high grading. As a GPAA Member you are given access to more than 200 mining claims that are open to prospecting for GPAA Members. You will have peace of mind knowing you are not claim jumping or high grading someone elses claim.
2. Education - The GPAA provides education and resources to make you a better prospector. Through our online Members Only community, chapters, magazine, social media, forums, and Youtube channels, you will learn the skills you need to be successful at finding gold. We also offer hands-on prospecting experiences through our national and local outings.
3. Supporting the Small-Scale Mining Community - Since 1968 the GPAA has been advocating for the small-scale prospector and miner. Your membership helps us to continue this mission of fascilitating and promoting responsible gold prospecting. By providing members access to claims and tools to find gold, we strive to foster a community dedicated to the appreciation and preservation of our natural resources while allowing everyone the opportunity to experience the excitement of finding gold.
Can friends and family join me on your mining claims?
Yes, absolutely! GPAA Membership allows claims access for you, your spouse, kids under 18, and up to 4 guests. Please note, you must accompany your family and guests to GPAA claims. Also, your guests are limited to panning only.
Where are your claims located?
Mining claims are filed on public land i.e. Bureau of Land Management & US Forest Service lands. Public lands are located in the western 13 states. We have mining claims for member's access in California, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska. We also have private leases available for members in Georgia, Alabama and Ohio. Additionally, GPAA members get discounts at private Pay-to-dig sites listed in the Mining Guide. The Mining Guide also lists public prospecting areas for your enjoyment.
